Actor and Costume

Many horror films have female lead charactrers. Although this character wouldn't continue to the rest of the film, we decided to make her appealing to draw in the audience. We chose a blond actress- typically the hair colour of female leads in a horror film. We chose generic 'cool' teenager clothes, as our film was aimed at teenagers and we wanted to appeal to them. By choosing red for the shirt and the hat, we had more colour to show up, as our film was quite grey due to the lighting. We decided to give the actress a hat, coat and bag to make it look as though she was planning on staying in the woods for a while, which would pose questions about her situation. thw hite shoes (although covered in mud to show she had been in the woods for a while) showed up in the darkness, so the feet could be seen, which are important, as she spends alot of her time on screen running. we also put dirt on her face to show she'd been running through the woods.

Radio Script

We decided to change our radio script to make it simpler, with only 1 person, and to a man. This made it sound more professional easier.

Mans voice: Polie have reported an incient in Saint Rethoms woods in the Streatham area. they are advising memebers od the publi to steer clear of the immediate vicinity until they know more.
On to the weather, there are clear skies today and low humidity.

This adds mysetry to the situation and gives a bit of bakcground information to the next scene. However, it poses questions, such as : Do they know about this warning and are there anyway? Did they go there because of the warning? Are they unaware of any incident and got unwillingly caught up in something?
Also, what was the incident? This gets the audience intrigued and draws them in.

We added in a mention to the weather to make it reognisabley like a radio, and also to contrast with the scary notice given before. It could make the audience forget about the scary notice and think of nicer things until they are thrust into the horrible situation in the woods.

In order to make it sound more authentic for our clip we decided to edit in on garage band to make it sound recognisabley like a radio reporter.

Light Arrangements

Due to the fact that our film was shot in dark woods at night, we knew we needed a light in order to get any footage. We wanted a generator to hook up the lights we had at school. therefor we contacted HSS hire about a generator/light source, and asked about hiring and costs. we organized with our school and the hire shop to be able to pick up the lights which we booked for 2/3 days. We took away a small light, but after a day's filming, all our footage was too dark, so we had to hire a bigger light which could light up more area. We used both lights carefully to make sure every necerssary detail was lit up.

  • Letter to Local Residence and Streatham Council

We emailed the local council about our late night filming in the woods of The Rookery in Streatham just to warn them about our late night screaming. We also posted little leaflets into the letterboxes of residents who lived extremely close to our filming location. This is a copy of the text in our email:

We are AS level media students at Graveney School, and we identified The Rookery as the place we wanted to shoot our film. However, we would have to be there after sunset, so we wanted to make sure you were aware we were there. Our film involves big lights, and scenes with screaming and people running. This was just to warn you in case anyone was concerned. We are also writing notes to hand through people’s doors that live around the area to warn them.

    Signs Trailer

In Bucks County, Pennsylvania, a five-hundred-foot crop circle is found on the farm of Graham Hess, the town's reverend. The circles cause a media frenzy and test Hess's faith as he journeys to find out the truth behind the crop circles.

    Paranormal Activity Trailer

Synopsis - After a young, middle class couple moves into a suburban 'starter' tract house, they become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be somehow demonic but is certainly most active in the middle of the night. Especially when they sleep. Or try to.

This film involves Micah leaving a video camera on a tripod in their bedroom to record whatever might be occurring while he and his lover sleep. He manages to document several phenomena such as objects moving on their own, lights and televisions switching on and off, noises and more. This gives us inspiration for our film as we were planning on using a tape recorder to film and document strange and eerie events that take place.

    Super8 Trailer

Synopsis - In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth - something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.

This film also concentrates on the "the thing" which is never really shown throughout the movie - this has given us inspiration for our movie as the power of not knowing and the 'fear of the unknown' is far more scarier than revealing what the actual 'thing' is. The fact that the children have a camera in the film and were capturing the events on camera is something we wanted to include in our film at the beginning using a handy-cam.

    Cloverfield Trailer

The handy-cam filming technique which was used for this film was a great success as it was unique filming technique which proved to get 4 wins, good ratings worldwide and high ratings on IMDb. However there are not so many films out there that have succeeded as effectively as this one in terms of the filming technique. Another example of a film that has used a hand-held camera to capture shots is The Blair Witch Project. Although Cloverfield is a different and original story it has raised a lot of controversy for the viewers; many love it for its individualism and clever way of shooting but others disagree.
The genre of the film is horror/mystery/sci-fi.

    Script

Through the hand held camera the screen starts off black as Joely is trying to get the camera to work.
    Screen remains black

Joely: oh c’mon work, please work! (Crying)

She continues to hit the camera with her hand until the screen goes fuzzy and it turns on. Camera is facing up towards her face and it’s shaking because she is scared, we see that she is distressed and confused.

Joely: Thank God (whispers) Bruce! (Whispers three times)

Camera pans down to see the glove on the floor

    Joely: Bruce! (Shouting)

There is a rustling noise and she begins to run, camera still in her hands.
The camera switches when she hears the rustling noise, this shows Joely from another perspective. The camera then switches back to handy cam when she first starts to run.

… After running for a while she trips over a branch on the floor, cuts her leg and the camera falls to the woodland floor.
Once the camera has dropped the handy cam switches to the main camera.

    Joely: Shit (annoyed)

She picks the camera back up, camera change to handy cam. She hits the camera to try to get it to work, it turns on and she uses the light to try to see the wound on her leg in the dark.

Joely: (in pain) ooow! Crap! (noises under her breath)

Camera pans up towards her face.

Joely: (terrified in a state of hysterics, crying) …if anyone finds this…get out while you can…it’s not safe (trembling) If you’ve seen the lights already…it’s too late.

Her face turns to the side and a faint light shines on the side of her face, she then turns back to the camera, her face in panic… scared to say anything…she then continues to run again.

The camera is shallow focus, on a close up of a tree branch, we hear a sound getting louder then we briefly see Joely run past really fast which disrupts the branch leave and the camera stays focused on the branch until it settles again.

She suddenly drops the camera and it falls to the floor sideways, we see her legs getting dragged away.
    Joely: (screaming in terror) AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Screen fades fuzzy, we hear the fuzzy noise from the camera

Whilst the opening credits come up we hear the radio over.

Radio presenter:  There have been sighted reports of strange lights in the sky, officials have warned to stay inside at night time while they continue to investigate the cause.

    Fades black.

    Final Synopsis

After reports of alien sightings and strange lights in the sky, a group of teenagers become intrigued and are thrust into a struggle for survival as an unbelievable event becomes a terrifying reality. It is not known how many have fallen before, but an abandoned camera left in the woods gives an insight into the dreadful events that took place that evening.

A teenage girl is attempting to restart a camera, the immediate area is pitch black and strange noises can be heard from the undergrowth. She is extremely distressed and confused as she tries to escape from unknown creatures who silently stalk her through the woods.
In her attempt to escape she falls over a fallen branch and injures her knee; looking down she can see wound she hears a unusual noise so she begins to run again.

She points the camera at herself attempting to explain the events of that night however she is disrupted by a creature who drags her away screaming into the depths of the forest.

Reports on the radio warn people in the town of the strange lights and to stay inside at night while investigations take place into the disappearance of a group of teenage friends. A few days pass and a group of six teenagers decide to venture into the secluded woods of Saint Reathams by breaking and entering. Not knowing about the reported sightings of strange lights in the area; they decide to go deeper into the woods with their crate of beer and camping equipment.

As it turns into night, the group of teenagers begin to realize that all is not quite right because of the strange lights and noises in the woods that appear to be stalking them.
After they find the camera in a remote area of the forest floor they observe the footage of the camera and see a group of teenagers before them, having fun upon entering the woods and assume they must have forgotten their camera. They decide to copy them and film on their camera, however when night falls they run out of memory and look back to delete the previous footage. They then see the terrible events that occured to the group before them; they attempt to leave the woods at once but find they are lost which leads to an argument making them separate.

One by one they are picked off by the strange beings lurking in the woods behind them looking for something to eat. Eventually their are only two friends left who get cornered by one of the aliens, in an attempt to defend themselves one of the last girls sprays her pepper spray in a last attempt to save herself which melts the alien. They both realize that alone they cannot kill them one by one so they sacrifice themselves in order to be taken to the leader alien. Once there, the leader decides they are no use to them so instantly plans to kill them but the boy causes a diversion in order to give the girl a chance to save herself however he is killed. Because of this diversion, the girl has a chance to kill the leader alien so she sprays her pepper spray and melts the leader alien which scares the rest of the aliens. They decide to teleport back into their spaceship and leave earth leaving the girl alone in the woods with her friend's body lying lifeless in her arms.
